There are many companies that try their best to go green. While these companies do a good job there is one that stands above the rest, the New Belgium Brewing company. This brewing company sets up their sustainability effort in three categories, environmental metrics, materials sourcing , and community support.
The environmental metrics category has three sub categories within it the first one is water. In 2006 the company took samples of how many hectoliters (HL) of water that it took for them to make on glass of beer. After the test was over it showed that they used about 3.99 HL of water for one glass of beer. in 2013 they ran the test again and showed that they used 4.31 HL of water for one glass of beer. The company is making strides to only use 3.5 HL per beer by the end of 2015. The second category is waste, in 2013 the company diverted 99.9 percent of their waste from the landfill that they had in 2008 and disposed o it in more environmentally friendly ways. The way that they were able to do that is because in 2011 they implemented many new ways to be more environmentally sound around their building including getting rid of two large dumpster and replacing them with single stream recycling containers. The third category is emission, since they first tested in 2006 the company had dropped down from 18 KG of CO2 to 16 KG in 2013 and they are trying to drop down to 14 KG by the end of 2015.
The second section of the three part environmental effort is materials sourcing. The way that they support their strive to be green before they company purchases something from a vendor they make sure that the vendor meets a set list of requirements including that the vendor reduces their CO2 emissions to the best of their ability in packaging, transportation, and other aspects of their production to sales of the product. Another way that the company goes green with their product is with the hops and the barley that they use to make their beer. while 95 percent of the hops that is used in america is reduced in the upper west portion of the country the company is based in Colorado so which means that it is not grown in their state. however the area is suitable enough for the hops to be grown and the company has been supporting many farmers that are starting to grow the hops that they need with in their own state and if they buy locally it could reduce on shipping cost and would greatly help to reduce the environmental impact that the way the company purchases their goods now. one last way that the company helps with the materials is that when purchasing from the brewery directly their is a series of questions that the company ask in order to determine which kind of packaging is the best fit for the costumer and the environment.
The last way that the company helps out the environment is through community support. There are many different ways that the company goes about with community support. They have provided over 6 million dollars in environmental stewardship grants, they have youth environmental education programs to teach kids the value of being environmentally friendly. However, one of the most successful programs that have been put in place is the bike program. The majority of the people who work for the company live in the town that it is based in. Due to this the company executives have been able to implement a program where each employee gets a bicycle and they are encouraged to ride their bike to work instead of driving. This program has greatly reduced the ecological footprint that the company emits.
